About The Knockerdown Inn – A Rich Heritage in Derbyshire

The story of The Knockerdown Inn is deeply rooted in the history of the Hopton Hall Estate and the Gell family. In the 16th century, Thomas Gell constructed the first recorded house at Hopton Hall, which later became the seat of the family. The Gells went on to oversee the development of many buildings across Derbyshire, including what would become The Knockerdown.

Built in 1838 as The Greyhound, the inn took its identity from the Gell family crest, which featured a dog, inspiring the affectionate local nickname Nock-a-down. After passing through several owners, The Knockerdown was acquired by Marstons Brewery in 1931 and remained under their ownership for many decades.
